Gary Forman<\/a> is a friend of mine. He’s a great speech writer.\u00a0 He was\u00a0working on\u00a0a stump speech for himself.\u00a0 He\u00a0came over to read it to me and get my feedback.<\/p>\n

It was fabulous, and so was he,\u00a0a fierce partisan in the world of communication.<\/p>\n

But what I really liked was a magical and playful phrase evoking the importance of\u00a0putting yourself into any talk you make. He called it, “The youie youness of you.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gary is adamant on the subject of authenticity, self-expression, and presence.\u00a0 He made the case that the greatest asset you have is the uniqueness of you.\u00a0 Nobody has had the exact same life experiences that you’ve had.\u00a0 Like a snowflake, you are unique.<\/p>\n

But what if your Youie Youness of You is not ready for prime time? What if you are monotonous, hard to hear,\u00a0fidgeting,\u00a0with a disorganized presentation?\u00a0 Does that still work?<\/p>\n

It is liberating to hear Gary speak about the Youie Youness of You.\u00a0 He gives us permission to let our talents take over, to trust ourselves, to be ourselves, to break the rules, to take the road less traveled, to let it all hang out.<\/p>\n

However, I’m not going to tell my audience that I’m nervous.\u00a0 I’m not going to tell them I am worried my armpits are moist and aromatic. And I’m definitely not going to scream at the guy who asked me that really embarrassing question on stage. I’m going to rein myself in a little.<\/p>\n

So I am hiding a part of myself to avoid confrontation and embarrassment.\u00a0 It’s just easier.<\/p>\n

Authenticity is a performance. It’s\u00a0one way we can choose to present ourselves.\u00a0 Excited is another way.\u00a0 And how about humble?\u00a0 Or solemn?\u00a0 That’s a good mask hang\u00a0on your face.<\/p>\n

Should the President let it all hang out?\u00a0 Would you like to listen to a\u00a0wandering stem winder\u00a0for forty-five minutes?<\/p>\n

Gary is smart, opinionated, and experienced as a writer and performer, so the Gary-like Garyness of Gary is ready for prime time.<\/p>\n

But if someone\u00a0sucks raw eggs, what\u00a0\u00a0are you going to do then?\u00a0 You, Caspar, will need to\u00a0learn how to project\u00a0yourself and sell your ideas effectively.<\/p>\n

I don’t think so.<\/p>\n

Or could the youie youness of you be gently groomed, educated and instructed to follow some of the rules of public speech to ensure listeners will listen and not sneak out the back door.<\/p>\n

I suppose I\u2019m a bit of a technician.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think the average guy should walk on a wire between two buildings without some serious training.\u00a0 Nor do I think he should walk out on stage to deliver a speech or presentation without an adequate amount of knowledge and skill.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, Gary is right.\u00a0 No matter what you talk about when presenting, your audience is thirsty for the youie youness of you.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
