I subscribe to Lapham\u2019s Quarterly<\/a>, a magazine you should get if you have an appetite for a perspective beyond the micro-moments of our digital age.<\/p>\n

As you know, I\u2019m in the business of helping knowledgeable people sell themselves and their ideas<\/a>.\u00a0 As we count down to the next presidential election, this is a timely topic to consider.<\/p>\n

Skillful public speaking, presenting, and debating require knowledge of the topics under discussion, but knowledge is not sufficient.\u00a0 To be a high-stakes presenter, or a persuasive public speaker, you need other skills or abilities that are more mysterious than intellect.<\/p>\n

I found this snippet in the Fall 2012 issue of Lapham\u2019s Quarterly (Volume V, Number 4.)\u00a0 It is taken from The Book of the Courtier<\/a>, <\/em>written by Baldassari Castiglione<\/a> in 1507.<\/p>\n

Because our modern corporations are similar in some ways to medieval principalities, I thought I would invite my friend Baldo to pen a guest blog.<\/p>\n

Here he is on the subject of making it look easy <\/em>and keeping it simple.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n

I have discovered a universal rule which seems to apply more than any other in all human actions or words, namely, to steer away from affectation at all costs, as if it were a rough and dangerous reef, and (to use perhaps a novel word for it) to practice in all things a certain nonchalance which conceals all artistry and makes whatever one says or does seem uncontrived and effortless.<\/p>\n

I am sure that grace springs especially from this\u2014since everyone knows how difficult it is to accomplish some usual feat perfectly\u2014and so facility in such things excites the wonder; whereas, in contrast, to labor at what one is doing as we say, to make bones over it, shows an extreme lack of grace and causes everything, whatever its worth, to be discounted.<\/p>\n

So we can truthfully say that true art is what does not seem to be art\u2014and the most important thing is to conceal it, because if it is revealed, this discredits a man completely and ruins his reputation.<\/p>\n

I remember once having read of certain outstanding orators <\/a>of the ancient world who, among other things they did, tried hard to make everyone believe that they were ignorant of letters, and dissembling their knowledge, they made their speeches appear to have been composed very simply and according to the promptings of nature and truth rather than effort and artifice.\u00a0 For if the people had known of their skills, they would have been frightened of being deceived.\u00a0 So you see that to reveal intense application and skill robs everything of grace.<\/p>\n

People who are highly skillful at a particular task make it look easy.\u00a0 They achieve that sense of ease through practice\u2014intense application over long periods of time.<\/p>\n

And masking your own erudition in order to put the people at ease is still practiced today by Ivy League pols who talk with Southern accents and call the people folks.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n

Baldassare Castiglione, from The Book of the Courtier<\/span>.\u00a0 Himself a courtier, the nobleman Castiglione knew whereof he spoke:\u00a0 he entered into the service of Francesco Gonzaga, the marquis of Mantua, in 1499 and Guidobaldo da Montefeltro, the duke of Urbino, in 1504.\u00a0 Later, in Rome, he served Pope Julius II and befriended the painter Raphael.\u00a0 Castiglione\u2019s book was translated into Spanish in 1534, French in 1537, and English in 1561.\u00a0 Francis Bacon and Thomas Cromwell were among its early English readers.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
